How to Make Money With TikTok Shop
Updated
There are two ways in. As an affiliate creator you post videos or LIVEs with a product link and earn a commission the seller sets, paid about 15 days after the order is delivered. As a seller you list your own products, pay TikTok a referral fee, and usually pay creators a commission on top. In 2025 roughly 851,000 affiliates were active and most generated under $10,000 in sales for the year. At the 13.1% average commission, that is under about $1,300 before taxes.

✓What you actually need to start
- Affiliate: a US-based TikTok account with at least 1,000 followers, age 18+, and a passed Creator Identity Verification. Joining costs nothing.
- Seller: a government ID, last 4 of your SSN or an ITIN, a W-9, proof of address and a bank account. TikTok lists no registration fee.
- Seller: TikTok-controlled shipping. Shipping-software firms reported (citing TikTok seller emails) that Seller Shipping was phased out for US local sellers between Feb. 25 and March 31, 2026, leaving TikTok labels or Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT). TikTok's public policy pages still describe Seller Shipping, so confirm in Seller Center. FBT is about $3.58 per single small unit per third-party breakdowns of TikTok's rate card, with storage free for the first 60 days.
- Seller: inventory and free samples for creators. Creators are the sales engine, and you pay for the product and the commission.
- Both: a tax set-aside. Commissions and sales profit are self-employment income. The IRS charges 15.3% self-employment tax once net earnings reach $400.
- Seller: product liability is on you. Check product liability insurance and any state or city business license. Rules vary by state.
Fees and shipping rules on TikTok Shop changed several times in 2024–2026. Check Seller Center for the rate on your category before you price anything.
👣The steps
💵The money, honestly
| Scenario | Gross | What you actually keep |
|---|---|---|
| Affiliate: one $25 sale at 13% commission | $25 sale | $3.25 commission. It goes to $0 if the order is fully refunded. |
| Affiliate: $10,000 in sales for the year (more than most active affiliates did in 2025) | ~$1,300 commission at 13.1% | About $1,100 after 15.3% self-employment tax, before any phone, gear or time costs |
| Seller: one $25 order sold through an affiliate and shipped by FBT | $25 | About $16.17–$16.67 after a 6–8% referral fee ($1.50–$2.00), 13% commission ($3.25) and FBT ($3.58). Your product cost, samples, ads and returns still come out of that. |
Commission math follows TikTok's formula: (revenue − refunds) × commission rate. The 13.1% average comes from Momentum Works data reported by eMarketer (SocialDay reports the same figure), and real rates run from about 5% to 30%. The $10,000 line comes from Momentum Works/Tabcut 2025 data reported by Inc.
Referral fee: TikTok's published US rate is 6% of (customer payment + platform discount − tax). Several seller guides report it rose to 8% for most non-food categories on August 4, 2026, with some beauty and electronics subcategories reportedly higher. TikTok's public fee page did not confirm this when we checked, so we show both. The FBT figure is from a third-party breakdown of TikTok's rate card. Heavier items cost more.
⚠ The reality check
- Most people on TikTok Shop make little or nothing. In 2025, Momentum Works/Tabcut counted ~851,000 active affiliates. Only 291 topped $1M in sales, and most generated under $10,000. More than half of ~803,500 US stores had zero sales.
- Sellers pay three or four times on every order. There is the referral fee (6%, reportedly 8% for most non-food categories since August 2026) and a creator commission (13.1% on average). Then there are TikTok-controlled shipping or FBT costs, plus free samples. Inc. reports that many beauty brands sit at breakeven or a loss while they launch.
- Returns take your money back. A full refund means $0 commission for the creator. Buyers get 30 days by default. If a seller doesn't respond within 4 business days, most return requests are approved automatically.
- The platform can change under you. On January 22, 2026, TikTok's US app, data and algorithm moved to the TikTok USDS Joint Venture. Silver Lake, Oracle and MGX hold 15% each and ByteDance keeps 19.9% (Forbes, Oct. 1, 2026). E-commerce and advertising reportedly stayed with ByteDance-controlled TikTok (Asia Tech Review, Jan. 23, 2026). Shipping rules and, reportedly, fees have changed within the last year.
❔Questions people actually ask
The GigWiz verdict
- You already make short videos people watch and can review products honestly on camera.
- You have a product with real margin (enough to survive a 6–8% fee, a ~13% creator cut and fulfillment) and stock you can ship within 1–2 business days.
- You want to be paid per video no matter what sells. That's UGC work, not affiliate commission.
- You planned to dropship slow overseas orders. The 6-business-day delivery rule and TikTok-controlled shipping make that hard.
Most active affiliates sold under $10,000 worth of product in 2025, which works out to roughly $1,300 in commission.
